Air Force Reserve Terms

Active Duty for Training (ADT)
Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve members serving on military orders in an active-duty status for training purposes.

Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC)
Headquartered at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, AFRC became the ninth major command of the Air Force on February 17, 1997.

Air National Guard (ANG)
The ANG serves as the air component of the National Guard.

Air Reserve Component (ARC)
The Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve together constitute the ARC.

Air Reserve Personnel Center (ARPC)
Located at Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado, ARPC manages personnel records for Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard members.

Air Reserve Technician (ART)
A dual-status individual who serves both as a federal civil service employee and an Air Force reservist in the same position. For example, an ART might work as a wing commander during reserve status and as an "Air Commander" in civil service status.

Annual Tour (AT)
A mandatory 15-day active-duty training period per fiscal year for Air Force reservists in the Selected Reserve who receive pay for training.

Associate Unit Programs

  • Classic Associate: A Regular Air Force unit retains primary responsibility for a weapon system, sharing the equipment with one or more reserve units. Both units maintain separate organizational structures and chains of command.
  • Active Associate: A reserve component unit has primary responsibility for a weapon system, sharing it with one or more Regular Air Force units. Both retain separate structures and chains of command.
  • Air Reserve Component Associate: Two or more reserve units integrate, with one retaining primary responsibility for the weapon system. Each retains separate structures and chains of command.

Inactive Duty Training (IDT)
Training performed by Selected Reserve members to maintain readiness for global mobility and wartime missions. Members train in reserve status without active-duty orders.

Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA)
A reservist assigned to a Regular Air Force unit, augmenting its mission when active-duty members are unavailable. IMAs typically train with the unit they support.

Joint Expeditionary Tasking (JET)
Describes the Air Force's role in fulfilling joint mission requirements.

Man-Day
A day of additional military duty, beyond minimum IDT and AT requirements, funded to pay for base pay, housing, subsistence, and other entitlements.

Mobilization Assistant (MA)
An Air Force Reserve colonel or higher assigned to support a general officer's active-duty role during mobilization.

Military Personnel Appropriation (MPA)
Funding allocated by the Regular Air Force to pay reservists on active duty for operational needs.

Selected Reserve (SelRes)
Units and individuals designated as essential for wartime missions. Subcategories include:

  • Drilling Reservists in Units: Members who participate in part-time unit training.
  • Training Pipeline Personnel: Members in initial training, including officers undergoing professional or flying training.
  • Individual Mobilization Augmentees (IMAs): Trained individuals assigned to active-duty or federal agencies, prepared for mobilization.
  • Active Guard Reserve (AGR): Members on active duty for full-time support of reserve units.

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR)
A Department of Defense organization based in Arlington, Virginia, promoting employer and community support for Guard and Reserve participation.

Reserve Officers Association (ROA)
An organization supporting U.S. military policy and serving current, retired, and former officers of the Reserve, Guard, and active-duty components.

Reserve Personnel Appropriation (RPA)
Funding managed by the Reserves and National Guard to pay members for reserve or active-duty training.

Total Force Integration (TFI)
A strategy to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness by sharing resources, reducing duplication, and consolidating efforts. TFI enhances contingency surge capabilities.

Traditional Reservist (TR)
A reservist who trains part-time, earning pay and retirement points or just retirement points, on a recurring schedule.

Unit Training Assembly (UTA)
A scheduled training period typically held the first weekend of each month at Air Force Reserve Command units.

Unacceptable Terms

  • AFRES: Replaced by "Air Force Reserve Command" on February 17, 1997.
  • Reserves: Avoid using this term to refer specifically to the Air Force Reserve. It is acceptable when discussing all reserve components collectively.
  • Weekend Warrior: Outdated term for once-a-month Guard and Reserve training.
  • In lieu of: No longer used for Air Force capabilities supporting joint operations.
