NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION, N.Y. --
Members here observed National Police Week with various activities held on base from May 15-19, 2017. This is a week-long observation in the United States that was established by Presidential proclamation on April 10, 1962 by President John F. Kennedy.
“Our goals are to recognize the duty and sacrifice of law enforcement officers around the nation,” said Staff Sgt. Kevin M. Dash, NFARS 2017 Police Week Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge. “We are also looking to recognize the members of the USAF Security Forces that have died while deployed serving/protecting our great country.”
The week launched on Monday with a formation of 107th Attack Wing Security Forces Squadron members performing a half-staff flag raise during Reveille. Immediately following the event, volunteers were scheduled to stand guard at the wreath that was laid out in front of the base flag pole.
Master Sgt. James Loughlin of the 914th Airlift Wing Security Forces Squadron said that the wreath-guarding shifts were broken up into 15 minute and half hour intervals. This was meant to act as a kind “buddy system” in an effort to bring more base participation to the event. This year members of the 914 SFS, 107 SFS, and members of the 914th Command Post all participated in the guarding of the wreath, said Loughlin.
Other base activities during the week included a Walk of Remembrance, a softball game and other morale events, and a burger burn cookout to close out the week's events.
