An installation fire fighter was presented with a national scholarship here, June 21.

Fire Inspector John Schultz was presented with a $2,000 scholarship by The Military Edge, a small business that supports active military members and veterans with education and employment opportunities.

Schultz, who is working towards his Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science, found the Military Edge on social media, and submitted his 500-word essay which earned him the scholarship.

Schultz said he has been in a holding pattern regarding his degree journey for a while since he separated from Active Duty in the Air Force. Due to the cost of education and the fact that he used his Tuition Assistance while serving, he was left to use his own money for his education.

"I've applied for many scholarships," said Schultz. "I was fortunate to find the Military Edge and apply for their scholarship, so this is going to go a long way to helping me finish my degree."

The Military Edge President Nikkia Patterson stated she started the business on her own five years ago, supplied with only her passion for her fellow veterans.

"I saw the struggle that veterans had finding opportunities and the resources and not knowing about resources that were provided for them to use," said Patterson.

Some of the services that are offered by the Military Edge include: Resume reviewing, interview preparation, as well as business advertising and transition seminars.

Nikkia and her husband, Pat, are both former Airmen and travel around the country promoting their business and support for veterans.

"All we want to say to the veterans is thank you for your service, and there are resources out there that you can use," said Pat Patterson director of marketing for The Military Edge. "We are here to help link you to whatever you need."

What Schultz needed was a scholarship opportunity and he found it.

"Keep working at it and keep applying for every opportunity" said Schultz, "Never give up, they are out there."
