Donated Denton cargo leaves Niagara, bound for Dominican Republic

NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION, N.Y. -- Rochester, New York's sister city, Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, is getting their long awaited donated equipment and supplies.

Earlier this year Niagara ARS received the Denton Cargo via ground transportation and had stored and prepared it for a future flight from Niagara.

The Denton Program allows private U.S. citizens and organizations to use space available on U.S. military cargo planes to transport humanitarian goods to countries in need, including: agricultural equipment, clothing, educational supplies, food, medical supplies, and vehicles.

The load for this particular delivery consisted of one ambulance and 11 pallets; comprised of approximately 33,000 pounds of water hoses and other water delivery equipment, jackets, helmets, pants and other Personal Protective Equipment that a fire fighter needs to combat fires, litter baskets to help transport a non-ambulatory person/victim from a remote or dangerous area, and tools and rescue equipment.

The ambulance, donated by Rural Metro, is a fully functional vehicle ready for immediate use if necessary according to Lee Johnson, Puerto Plata Rochester Sister City Committee Member. However, the Dominicans plan to completely disassemble, paint and reassemble the vehicle prior to it being put back into service.

The Puerto Plata Rochester Sister City Committee is also working on purchasing a special type of fire truck from an auction where public service vehicles are sold in the near future.

"If and when the truck has been approved by the Denton Cargo Program, we will prep, load plan and load the other vehicle," said Chief Master Sgt. Thomas Buschang, 30th Aerial Port Squadron superintendent.

Depending on the size and weight of the vehicle, a Niagara C-130 aircraft may transport the next vehicle bound for the same destination.
