Every day is Earth Day at Niagara

  • Published
Earth Day is a day to remind ourselves how important our environment is for us today as well as for future generations and here at Niagara and throughout the Air Force that message has become a way of life.

We are fortunate that the Air Force makes sustainability such a high priority in all that we do while still maintaining the mission. So every day, we encourage you to do your part to reduce your impact on the environment both at work as well as at home.

Here are some quick stats on how NFARS has been doing its part in achieving sustainability:

- The Recycling Program on base has been 100% sustainable for the past 2 years! This means the cost for the collection of recyclables is 100% offset by the proceeds the base receives from these materials. This is all because of your participation and makes Niagara stand out as one of the few bases within the command that can make this statement.

- After the first 2 quarters of FY13, Niagara is on track to exceed waste diversion rate goals for the entire fiscal year. NFARS has diverted 55% (FY13 goal is 46%) of our non-hazardous solid waste and 84% (FY13 goal is 56%) of our construction debris!

- Each week, NFARS recycles over 1 ton of paper and mixed recyclables (plastic/glass/metal)! That's over 52 tons a year!

- Since the start of the e-waste collection location at the Base Recycling Center in November 2012, NFARS has diverted 2 tons of e-waste! This is a substantial amount of waste that has been diverted in such a short time; not to mention what has been recycled previously.

We would not be this successful without your participation every day...so thank you and keep doing a great job!
