Military affairs council reaches out to local high school art students

NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION, N.Y. --  Flanked on each side by a billowing American flag, "Western New York Supports our Air Base" can be seen on bumpers across western New York. This bumper sticker was one of the many tools that the Niagara Military Affairs Council used to raise awareness around the community in 2005 during the Base Realignment and Closure Committee actions.

This year, NIMAC decided to solicit ideas for a new bumper sticker and reached out to the Niagara Wheatfield Senior High School art department. Students were offered the opportunity to submit their work for the design of the new bumper sticker. Tracy Bloom, an art teacher at the high school was excited to have a couple of her classes participate in this contest.

"Thank you so much for providing this wonderful real world opportunity to our students of graphic design," said Bloom. There were 10 submissions for the contest and there were three winners.

First place was awarded to Autumn Hayes for her 'Keeping Freedom Alive' design. Her design will be featured on the next NIMAC bumper sticker to be seen around the area. In addition, a prize of $100.00 was presented to Hayes from NIMAC for her winning entry.

Second place went to Nick Barcer for his 'They Fought For Our Freedom' design entry, and third place was awarded to Emily Trunzo for her 'Home of the Brave' submission. These second and third place winners were each awarded a certificate and an American flag courtesy of NIMAC and Old Glory Flag.

Winners were announced on Monday, June 11, 2012 at the Niagara Wheatfield High School during a special ceremony by NIMAC Chairman Merrell Lane and NIMAC board member and Niagara County Legislator David Godfrey. Representatives from the 914th and 107th Airlift Wings were also in attendance.

"Thank you all who participated; it's amazing what you have done," said Lane.
