After nearly 30 years of being worn by Airmen in the United States Air Force, the Battle Dress Uniform is no longer authorized for wear within the ranks.

As of November 1, 2011, the Airman Battle Uniform will replace the BDU as the utility uniform of the U.S. Air Force.

Every branch of the U.S. Military wore the BDU since it was introduced September 1981. The Air Force is the third service branch, including the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army to fully phase-out the BDU and adopt a different combat uniform.
