Niagara Firefighters support local community

NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION, N.Y. -- Firefighters from the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station Fire Department were seen today in the community however, they were not fighting a fire or any hazardous material; they were responding to the need of a local charity.

Lead by Firefighter William Tiedeman , members of the station donated the proceeds from an idea they have been cooking up for a sometime: a cookbook.

The firefighters sold 200 copies of the cookbook containing more than 50 homemade recipes to servicemembers on the Niagara Falls Reserve Station, N.Y., and donated one hundred percent of the proceeds to the Niagara Falls City Mission.

"This is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I enjoy cooking and I have seen department cookbooks at other stations I have been to," said Firefighter Tiedeman. "This was a way for us to give something back to the community and help those who are less fortunate".

Niagara's Firestation is very involved in helping the community all year. The members regularly participate in activities such as the "Ride for Roswell", "Tour de Cure", "Fight for Air" stair climb, and the United States Marine Corps "Toys for Tots". The Firemen spread their warmth by visiting local hospitals as well.

Fire Inspector John Schultz, stated that the Firestation tries to give back to the community in any way or any time, not just the holiday season; and this cookbook was a perfect example of that mentality.

"This was a fun project and it went extremely smooth from start to finish. We are blessed with great people here at Niagara; the support was overwhelming".

After all was sold and done, the Niagara Falls Fire Department donated $1,200 to the city mission.
