Brothers in Arms

NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION, N.Y. --  For any civilian, the day you join the military is a life-changing and special one.

It was on his enlistment day that Kurt Mommertz found that this enlistment was different and possibly more memorable than others who had joined the military before him.

Mr. Mommertz joined the military on January 6, 2011, his parents were there and so was his older brother SSgt. Micheal Mommertz, his recruiter.

Not only do the Buffalo, N.Y. natives, have a special bond as biological brothers, they have become brothers in arms at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, N.Y.
Mr. Mommertz who will join the 914th Airlift Wing as a fire fighter said, The best things about joining is that he was recruited by his brother and follow in his footsteps in the United States Air Force Reserve.

Mr. Mommertz has watched his brother wear the uniform for years and decided now was the time to become an Airman.

"I've wanted to join the Air Force since I saw my brother graduate in from basic training in 2002," Mr. Mommertz said.

Sergeant Mommertz is thrilled that his younger brother is joining the Air Force Reserve and he was the one to recruit Kurt.

"It was an honor to recruit him," said Sergeant Mommertz. "It feels great he's joined."
Although recruiting his younger brother is quite the milestone, Sergeant Mommertz implied that he is not done getting civilians to "cross into the blue".

"The United States Air Force Reserve is the best thing in the world;" said Sergeant Mommertz . "It helped me [better myself] and I want to help others do the same."
