Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station claims big economic impact of WNY Published Dec. 15, 2010 By Senior Airman Chelsea Gitzen 914th Airlift Wing Public Affairs NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- The 914th Airlift Wing and the 107th Airlift Wing have impacted the local Niagara Air Reserve Station community to the tune of more than $165 million during the 2010 fiscal year, more than $10 million up from the 2009 FY, according to recent Economic Impact Analyses from each unit. These analyses are detailed reports encompassing all financial impacts of the installation. "The Economic Impact Analysis presents an unclassified estimate of the economic effect a military installation has on the economic area where the military installation is located," said Cindy Jones, 914 AW cost analyst. "The economic area includes the residences of the majority of the military and civilian employees of the installation." Also according to these reports, the amount of indirect jobs created by each unit total to more than 800 jobs, which translates to more than $34 million contributed to the local community. The installation employs in a range of positions from Traditional Reservists and Department of Defense Civilians to Base Exchange and Outdoor Recreation employees. The radius of this economic impact spans from about a 30-mile radius of the base. On the installation, personnel salary amounts to more than $87 million. This includes Active Duty, Guardsmen, Reservists as well as Department of Defense Civilians and other positions such as those at the Base Exchange and private businesses on base. In addition to these local contributions, the installation has also funded various construction projects amounting to more than $30 million. These projects include building a new Community Activity Center as well as an indoor small arms range, repairing the installation's tennis court surface, altering the old command post building to serve as the new Emergency Operation Center, modifying the supply building, repairing taxiways on the runway, and repairing parking lots around base. Acting Wing Commander Col. Mark Murphy reiterated the importance of the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station "The Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station is a key partner and part of the fabric of Western New York. The economic impact of this facility, and the people who live and work in our community, ensures the viability of the surrounding area and provides our best and brightest an opportunity to stay in Western New York and to serve our nation," said Murphy.
