Effective 1 Sep 2010 the war in Iraq will acquire a new official moniker:
"Operation New Dawn (OND)." Decorations in support of Iraq operations with inclusive periods 1 Sep 10 or later must use OND versus OIF. Decorations in support of Iraq operations with inclusive periods prior to 1 Sep 10 will still use OIF. OIF and OND may be used for periods that overlap into both operations.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates requested that on September 1, 2010 Operation Iraqi Freedom would be changed to Operation New Dawn. Mr. Gates explains "The name change coincides with the changing mission for U.S. forces in Iraq. The name change with the change of mission sends a strong signal that Operation Iraqi Freedom has ended and our forces are operating under a new mission. It also presents opportunities to synchronize strategic communication initiatives, reinforce our commitment to honor the Security Agreement and recognize our evolving relationship with the Government of Iraq."
