New lane lights were installed above the entry lanes at the Lockport Rd. gate, here, on Nov. 20, 2015.

The lights, which appear as a red "X" or green arrow, help facilitate the safe and efficient entry of base personnel while maintaining a proactive defensive posture.

"These lights will enhance our ability to get people on base in a quick and safe manner," said Master Sgt. Gary Beaty, Alpha Flight Flight Chief, 914th Security Forces Squadron. "They make it easy to tell which lanes are open, and which are closed."

Located high above the gate shack, the lane lights are designed to allow drivers entering the installation to see, far in advance, if the secondary entry lane is open allowing them to que accordingly. This new process helps eliminate the need for Security Forces personnel to enter the flow of traffic in low-light, high-traffic situations such as a Unit Training Assembly.

"What it's all about is creating a safer traffic flow during the morning rush," said Beaty, "If it's dark or snowing it's difficult to see our Defenders who are out directing traffic."

Future improvements to security/safety procedures include the anticipated installation of swing-arm barriers.
