914 AW members celebrate Air Force birthday

NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION, N.Y. --  More than 20 members of the 914th Airlift Wing, along with members of the community, gathered to celebrate the United States Air Force's 68th birthday today at Hyde Park in Niagara Falls, N.Y.

The Niagara Falls Veterans Memorial Monument Commission hosted a celebration of the USAF birthday by striking colors and re-raising them with the USAF flag, which will fly for one week in honor of our flying force.  NFARS Honor Guard performed the observances for the day.

"The purpose of this event is to honor the Air Force on the date of its inception," said Ken Hamilton, commissioner, Niagara Falls Veterans Memorial Monument Commission.

Following the ceremony attendees were invited to enjoy refreshments and share stories. Members of the unit reflected on their service and talked about what these types of celebrations mean to them.

"There is a very diverse group of people here--you have young, brand new two stripers and you have old people, like me," said Lt. Col. Pat Campbell, 914th Operations Group Deputy Commander, who has been a part of the Air Force for more than 25 years. "That picture summarizes what the military is today. All of us are intermixed to make a very effective fighting force."

The Commission is planning to celebrate all military branches birthdays in similar fashion.
