Niagara observes National Police Week

NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION, N.Y. --  Members of the 914th Airlift Wing participated in events in observance of National Police Week from May 11-15, 2015, here.

In 1962 then President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th of every year as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Law enforcement entities from around the world participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

"It's important to stop and remember the members of the 914th Security Forces Squadron for the job that they do every day," said Maj. Nathan List, commander, 914th Security Forces Squadron. "Their selfless performance in standing post, day in and day out, in all types of weather. Also, it's a time to remember all those in law enforcement who have passed away and to reflect on their duties and all they've done."

On Wednesday May 13, 2015, Defenders from the 914th SFS held a memorial service honoring Tech. Sgt. Ian Fallon a unit member who passed away exactly one year ago.  This service was conducted at a designated location outside of the Security Forces Squadron building on base.

"We're going through the coordination process for turning (this location) into a permanent memorial," said List. "It would be dedicated to Sergeant Ian Fallon but it would honor all those who have been part of the organization, but have since passed."

The 914 SFS participated in several activities throughout the week, in addition to the tribute for Fallon, including: Reveille and Retreat ceremonies and a softball game as well as a reading of the Police Week proclamation.
