April Spotlight: From Green to Blue

NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION, N.Y. --  "My family was getting a little homesick," said Staff Sgt. Michael Moore, 914th Security Forces Squadron, who along with his wife, grew up in Niagara Falls.

Often times, as military members, we are faced with complicated decisions that force us to re-evaluate our chosen career path. Such was the case for Moore, who left the stability of an active duty position in 2007 with the 25th Infantry Division, U.S. Army stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii for the U.S. Air Force Reserve here and the unpredictability of Western New York weather.

"Just the opportunity to serve," said Moore, a self-described "military brat", as the son of a U.S. Marine. "Regardless of the service, the military is a good job and gives you pride in your country."

Moore has been married for 13 years and has two kids. His hobbies include: volleyball, hiking, hunting and fishing.

As a Unit Deployment Manager for the 914 SFS, it is Moore's job to ensure members of his unit are ready to deploy when their name is called. Traditionally, Security Forces units are diverse because of their mission.  Some of his tasks include: setup for any pre-deployment objectives and mobility folders prior to deployment, palette buildup while overseas and facilitating return objectives once members have finished a deployment.

"My job is rewarding because I get to see the full scope of the deployment process for a large unit," said Moore, whose upcoming tasking includes more than 60 personnel. "It's important to exercise good time management and prioritize tasks."

That ability to prioritize is noticed and appreciated by SFS leadership.

"I'm former Soldier, and he came from the Army as well," said Master Sgt. David Buell, supply and resources noncommissioned officer in charge, 914th SFS. "He's very detail oriented and meticulous--I consider him to be a go-to young NCO."

Moore joined the Air Force Reserve in 2007 after serving in the U.S. Army from 2002-2007. He appreciates the opportunities that the U.S. Air Force provides.

"I enjoy the camaraderie with the guys I work with," said Moore. "I also appreciate that the Air Force takes care of family members first and foremost."

Like many intrinsically motivated people, Moore has personal and military goals that are purposeful, measurable and attainable.

"I'm working on a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice," said Moore. "My Air Force goals are to finish my 7-level (career development) course and to continue pursuing the rank of Master Sergeant."

Staff Sgt. Moore understands, firsthand, the demands of a military lifestyle. He has completed various deployments, as well as, the requirements associated with both an Infantryman and Security Forces member. These jobs have a tendency to be repetitive and focus on muscle memory in order to prepare for the event of a crisis. He takes the time to mentor younger enlisted members about staying focused through tougher times.

"Stay motivated and stay the course," said Moore. "You joined for a reason--make the reason your own."
