914th Fire Emergency Services participates in Fire Prevention Week

NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION, N.Y. --  Members of the 914th Fire Emergency Services Flight here concluded Fire Prevention Week which ran from October 5-11, 2014.

Fire prevention week is a national program established to commemorate The Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Each year fire frograms from around the country take time to focus on the importance of fire safety.

"We're laying the foundation," said John P. Schultz, assistant chief, Fire Prevention for the 914th Mission Support Group. "If one child remembers something from this week and it saves a life, this program is a success."

Personnel assigned to the fire department here, participated in various activities to promote Fire Prevention Week 2014. The 914th Fire Emergency Services hosted a local school for a discussion about fire safety and a demonstration of some of the equipment the firefighters use.

Additionally, Chief Schultz and Jose Vasquez, a firefighter with the 914th CEF traveled to a local daycare on Thursday, October 9, to speak to pre-kindergarten children about basic fire safety. As Vasquez demonstrated how to put on fire protection equipment, Schultz spoke to the children about the importance trusting firefighters even if they look scary.

On base, to promote enthusiasm for the week, Chief Schultz sent daily trivia questions to the base-wide population. Members answered questions for a chance to win a prize each day for a correct answer.

"I started it several years ago. We were looking for something that didn't cost a lot of money and would enable us to reinforce fire safety and get the word out to the streets," said Schultz. "The response (this year) was awesome. I received an average of 50 responses a day with about 90% having the correct answers. I got donations from various organizations for prizes and hopefully we will be able to continue the little things that make a big difference in the end." 

This year's slogan was Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives, Test Yours Every Month According to the latest National Fire Prevention Association research, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
