Niagara practices energy action every month

NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION, N.Y. --  October is Energy Action Month across the federal government; the Air Force has leveraged this effort to reach directly to Airmen to encourage them to find ways to save energy while performing the mission. Members of the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station practice energy conservation and initiate new energy ideas every day.

Just some of these practices include car pooling. Others such as Lt.Col. George Hoffman, Chief of safety uses his bicycle to get around the base. When the weather is inclement Hoffman uses the safety office vehicle which is powered by natural gas to perform his duties.

According to Mr. Gerry Hromowyk, 914th Airlift Wing Chief, Engineering and Planning. Several energy saving projects have been implemented to reduce power consumption on base.

"The first has to do with installing sensors in almost every room in every facility that will
turn off lights when the room is left vacant for 10 minutes or more. Second, we are expecting new power strips that sense when your monitor goes to black and anything plugged into the strip would also turn off. So if you left your room for an extended period your overhead lights would go off or if you had a table lamp plugged into the power strip, it would go off as well," said Hromowyk.

Two other projects waiting funding are replacing exterior lights on facilities with LED lights and retro commission HVAC units or replace them with new ones.
