Mission transition continues at Niagara
Construction work continues on the 914th Airlift Wing headquarters building at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, N.Y. on December 14, 2016. The 10.9 million dollar U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project is scheduled to be completed this time next year. Everything except the main structure is being removed from the 1950s era building to make way for a new, more efficient open concept facility that is designed for maximum space utilization and energy efficiency. The former all ranks club is currently being renovated to provide space for several 914th Force Support Squadron, Sustainment Services Flight, sections. The Sustainment Services Flight is temporarily operating out of a pre-WWII building that is slated for demolition upon completion of renovations. From afar this structure may look like a huge birthday cake without candles, but in reality it is a protective wrap that covers a fuel cell tank used to store fuel for the C-130 aircraft at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, N.Y. on May 23, 2012. The tank now empty will be repainted from both the interior and exterior surfaces for corrosion control. This new hardened facility will replace a guard booth which did not allow security forces a clear view of the main gate vehicle check. This new state of the art over watch has protective measures built into the booth to protect the guard on duty against hostile action, a higher vantage point and allows the individual to assist in deterring any unauthorized entry. Workers begin the process of removing the pop-up barriers located near the main gate at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, N.Y. on March 7, 2012. Several issues including possible environmental impact is the reason a decision was made to replace them. Pop-up barriers are one of many standard measures used to help protect people who work and visit federal facilities. An integral part of the new system is manufactured locally by a western New York company. The main gate is scheduled to be closed until the end of March when work is completed on the barrier.
