The 914th Fire and Emergency Services provided an advanced CPR class to base personnel at the Fire Station here, August 13, 2014.

Philip Smith, a firefighter with the 914th Civil Engineer Fire and Emergency Services instructed a CPR for healthcare providers class to five members of NFARS.

"This class is for people that have advanced training and are expected to perform life-saving measures at a certain level," said Smith.

The Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Classroom Course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. The course required approximately four hours, including skills practice and testing. In the classroom students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations.

"The fire department offers these classes to improve and enhance relations on and off base," said Smith, an American Heart Association BLS Instructor. "We want to promote a basic understanding of emergency medical procedures, as well as, help standardize the scope of practice for responders."

Upon completion of the course, participants receive an AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers Course Completion Card which is valid for two years.
